"Good Luck Point" was the original name of the area that became Ocean Gate. Trains operated to the area by the Pennsylvania Railroad served what was called "Good Luck Point" — visitors built cottages that were the start of the community that became Ocean Gate. The Ocean Gate Yacht Club was chartered in 1910, serving as a primary recreational boating anchor along the Toms River near its confluence with Barnegat Bay. Ocean Gate also features a mile-long non-commercial boardwalk providing scenic views of the Toms River — a defining waterfront amenity. AT&T also operated a shortwave radio facility in Ocean Gate historically. Ocean Gate was also the first New Jersey municipality to install wind turbines (subsequently shut down).

Ocean Gate was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 28, 1918, from portions of Berkeley Township. An additional portion of Berkeley Township was annexed on February 28, 1953. Today Ocean Gate is the smallest of 33 Ocean County municipalities by area — 33rd of 33 county, 544th of 565 NJ, with a total area of 0.54 sq mi (0.45 land + 0.093 water = 17.22%).
