The school was named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut — the first American naval officer to rise to that rank. Notable graduates included Alan B. Shepard — the first American in space (1961 Freedom 7 Mercury mission) and later commander of Apollo 14 (1971 Moon landing). In 1945 the Admiral Farragut Academy established a second campus in St. Petersburg, FL — where the Florida campus continues today. The Pine Beach campus has since closed, but the school's historical heritage remains a defining identity anchor of Pine Beach.
Pine Beach was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 26, 1925, from portions of Berkeley Township. The referendum was held March 25, 1925: 63 Yes, 15 No, 1 Spoiled. The document was signed by the Berkeley Township Clerk on March 26, 1925. The first election was held April 21, 1925 for positions of Mayor, Council Members, Assessor, and Collector. The organizational meeting was held April 27, 1925. Today Pine Beach has a population of 2,139 (2020) — its highest decennial count ever, estimated 2,193 (2023).
