Beachwood was founded in 1914 when the publishers of the New-York Tribune newspaper purchased a large parcel of land and divided it into smaller plots. People could buy a plot of land for $19.60 — as a bonus, they also got a six-month subscription to The Tribune. The first families moved to Beachwood in April 1915. Plans were made for fun places like a Club House, Pier, Bath House, Lodge, dining hall, train station, and tennis courts. By 1919 population exploded to 1,200 summer residents. By 1960 year-round population was 2,774. By 1990 nearly 10,000. Beachwood was officially incorporated as a borough on April 12, 1917 from portions of Berkeley Township — first Mayor was Joseph H. Senior. In 2008, the Beachwood Historical Alliance was formed to find, fix up, and protect important historical places and items.

The Jakes Branch Park is Ocean County's newest park, located within the township.
