Where does the name "Ship Bottom" come from?

Ship Bottom is one of the oldest place names on Long Beach Island. According to local historian John Bailey Lloyd, author of Six Miles at Sea, the name dates from an unusual shipwreck that occurred in March 1817. The captain of a schooner heading south was navigating through a thick fog when he heard cries from the direction of the shoreline. The place of the shipwreck and the rescue became known as "Ship Bottom." The area later became Life Saving Station #20 in 1872, and the first permanent dwelling was established in 1898 by Captain Wesley Truex, keeper of the station. On January 18, 1910, the Italian boat Fortuna ran aground on the 16th Street beach during fog; its abandoned anchor was recovered by volunteers and now stands in front of the Ship Bottom Borough Hall to honor LBI's maritime history.
