Plumsted Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1845, from portions of Jackson Township — while the area was still part of Monmouth County. Plumsted became part of the newly created Ocean County on February 15, 1850. The township was named after Clement Plumsted — an English Quaker who purchased a large parcel of land. Motto: "Pride in Plumsted, the State's Center" — reflecting the primary geographic center of New Jersey position. Today Plumsted Township is the 9th-largest of 33 Ocean County municipalities by area (57th of 565 NJ, 39.53 sq mi total), with a population of 8,072 (2020), estimated 9,387 (2024).
