Westerleigh

 

Located in the northwest part of Staten Island, Westerleigh is bordered by Jewett Avenue to the east, Crystal Avenue on the west, Watchogue Road to the south and College Avenue on the north. Westerleigh is a safe, family-friendly neighborhood with good schools like Susan E. Wagner High School. It is also close to the College of Staten Island, an affiliate of the City University of New York. Walk along the tree-lined streets and experience the beauty of this historical place, as you notice the names of the streets- many are named after early figures in the Prohibition movement.

 

Many homes in Westerleigh include those of the Victorian style which feature chestnut trims, oak floors, street-level wrap-around porches and small balconies on upper floors, as well as parlors, libraries and formal dining rooms. There are also new developments and construction options, as well as townhouses and condos. Some areas of Westerleigh experience views of Newark, New Jersey and even further afield on a clear day.

 

A popular meeting place in Westerleigh is Westerleigh Park, bordered by Maine and Springfield Avenues on the north and south, and Neal Dow and Willard Avenues to the west and east, respectively. Here every June, residents gather to celebrate a holiday called Patriotic Sunday. The park is a valuable place for area residents to socialize; it is difficult to go for a walk through it without meeting someone you know. Green spaces like this emphasize the community spirit that prevails in the area.
