The Tuckerton Seaport is a working maritime village and museum located at 120 West Main Street (Route 9) in Tuckerton — primary Tuckerton attraction. The 40-acre site opened May 2000 and features 17 historic and recreated buildings connected by a boardwalk, a maritime forest and wetlands nature trail, and a re-created Tuckers Island lighthouse. Tuckers Island (also known as Sea Haven) was an island that contained two hotels, the 1869 Little Egg Harbor Lifesaving Station, and the original lighthouse. The island was wiped away in a storm, including its lighthouse which fell into the sea. The original island remains under water. The re-created lighthouse at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum features wall-mounted pictures showing the instant that the original lighthouse fell into the sea.
The area that is now Tuckerton was settled in 1698-1699 by Quakers Edward and Mordecai Andrews. A Friends meeting was established in 1702. Edward Andrews built a cedar log grist mill in 1704 (still stands today). The town was formerly known as "Clamtown" and "Fishtown." Tuckerton was named after Ebenezer Tucker — statesman, Revolutionary War patriot, and the first custom collector commissioned in 1791 when Tuckerton became an official US Port of Entry. The area was part of Burlington County until 1891 when it joined Ocean County. Tuckerton was officially incorporated as a borough on February 18, 1901 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Little Egg Harbor Township. The first Mayor was Frank R. Austin. Even though Tuckerton is completely surrounded by Little Egg Harbor Township, it is its own separate municipality.
