Welcome to Heartland Village

Heartland Village Neighborhood

Heartland Village is a located in the “heart” of Staten Island and features a variety of housing types. There are many things to love about this area- closeness to all the conveniences of Richmond Avenue including the mall and Heartland Village Plaza, being surrounded by park land, the central location which provides quick access to the rest of the island, and affordable entry-level condos in a mostly suburban borough.
Following the Verrazano Bridge’s opening in 1964, the mostly rural mid-island section underwent significant changes in a short time. Houses began popping up all over New Springville in the late 60’s. Prior to that time, this part of Staten Island had only farms, then a small airport and drive-in movie theater.
The Staten Island Mall was completed in 1971, and this drew more residents to the area. Once residential construction took off in New Springville, a development within this neighborhood was built in the 1980’s called Heartland Village. The name became widely used to describe the whole neighborhood on the northern end of New Springville, which is now a distinct community in its own right.

Life in Present-Day Heartland Village

The boundaries for Heartland Village are roughly as follows: Richmond Avenue to the west, Forest Hill Road to the east, Richmond Hill Road to the south, and Ashworth Avenue to the north. The community is directly south of the College of Staten Island and directly north of the Staten Island Mall which lies in the boundaries of New Springville.
Though a separate community, New Springville and Heartland Village are often associated and are similar in a number of ways. Together, the communities are surrounded by parks: the new Fresh Kills park to the west and south, the Greenbelt to the east, and Willowbrook Park to the north. This community offers more urban living close to the mall with many nice condos that make home ownership achievable in the lower-priced segment. However, most streets here are dominated by detached and semi-attached homes, with more condos in New Sprinville. Most homes here are on the newer construction end.
Heartland Village is also praised for its safe neighborhoods and good schools. Children here are usually zoned for IS 72 Rocco Laurie, an 8/10 school. Also here in Heartland Village is the is the Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning, as well as the CSI High School for International Studies serving grades 6-8, both 8/10 as well. Elementary schools in this district are the Space Shuttle Columbia School, PS 69 Daniel D. Tompkins, and for high school, either Port Richmond High School or Susan E. Wagner High School.
Getting around in Heartland Village is especially convenient since it’s at the center of the island. Most households use a car in this suburban neighborhood. The main roads in Heartland Village are Richmond Avenue, Forest Hill Road, and Rockland Avenue. Richmond Avenue will bring you right to I-278 in just a few minutes.
Most buses can be caught on Richmond Avenue: the s44 and s94 to St. George, or Tottenville southbound, while the s59 is Port Richmond bound or eastbound to Hylan Boulevard. The s89 provides service to Bayonne, Staten Island’s only New Jersey-bound bus. Richmond Avenue express buses SIM4, SIM4c, and SIM8 head north to Manhattan. On Marymount and Travis Avenues, you can catch the s61 and s91 bus routes to the St. George Ferry or Staten Island Mall. The SIM31 is nearby on Rockland Avenue also.
