Welcome to Grant City

Grant City is a small mid-island community at the nexus of Staten Island’s best amenities. At pretty exactly the mid-point between the north and south shores, Grant City is situated next to the beach, the train, Hylan Boulevard, plus many parks and sports fields. The neighborhood is surrounded by Dongan Hills to the north, Midland Beach to the east, New Dorp to the south, and Todt Hill to the west- all well-known and desired communities in their own right.

Grant City: Background

The neighborhood was originally known as French Town. Then during the Civil War, it was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant.
One of Staten Island’s older communities, many of the homes in Grant City today date back a century or more. However, a large number of housing starts surged in the 1950’s through the 60’s coinciding with the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and subsequent housing boom. And because of rising investor activity in the Midland Beach area, Grant City has seen a good deal of new construction in recent years too.
Grant City is also home to a number of condo developments, namely along Lincoln and Colfax Avenues. These and several other prominent streets in Grant City were named after historical figures: Lincoln Avenue after Abraham Lincoln, Colfax Avenue after VP Schuyler Colfax, Greeley Avenue after newspaper reporter Horace Greeley, Adams Avenue after president John Adams, and Fremont Avenue after General C. Fremont, Republican presidential candidate and Staten Island resident.

Lifestyle in Grant City

Between all the renowned establishments on Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Road, this area’s great restaurants will always have steep competition. Practically every retail amenity you can think of is here, from closeout stores to high-end retail and a new dine-in cinema at the brand new plaza The Boulevard.
Kids in Grant City are lucky too. Idyllic summers could easily be spent at Midland Beach, Miller Field, or the Greenbelt (particularly for Boy Scouts at Pouch Camp). This area has good schools: PS 41 New Dorp, IS 2 George L. Englebert, and New Dorp High School. Private Schools in the Grant City area include St. Christopher School, Our Lady Queen of Peace School, New Dorp Christian Academy, and the St. Ann School.
There are many options for getting around in this neighborhood. Main thoroughfares here are Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Road. The Staten Island Expressway is only a few minutes north by car, and the nearby Verrazano-Narrows Bridge makes a Brooklyn commute fairly quick.
Grant City is also one of the better spots to catch a train or bus for those who do not commute by car. The Grant City stop on the Staten Island Railroad brings you to St. George where you’ll connect to the Manhattan- bound ferry. But maybe a bus route works better for you. Local routes here include the s51, s78, s76, and s81, serving mid-island on the southernmost end and the St. George Ferry Terminal on the other. The s79 is a select bus line heading to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Over on Hylan is where you can access many different express bus routes. The city-bound buses SIM1, SIM1c, SIM5, SIM6, SIM7, SIM9, SIM10, and SIM11 all stop here.
So as you can see, there are lots of reasons to take your home search to Grant City. The ease of transportation, strong school system, outdoor activities, and numerous retail and dining options that dot the neighborhood’s main streets draw residents from all over the five boroughs.
