The address was 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey — a 1905 Dutch Colonial Revival with six bedrooms, four bathrooms, four fireplaces, and a history stretching back more than a century. Maria had grown up in Westfield. This was a homecoming as much as a purchase.

They never spent a single night there.

Days after closing, the first letter arrived. Handwritten on the envelope: The New Owner. What was typed inside introduced a figure calling himself The Watcher — a self-described custodian of the house whose grandfather had watched it in the 1920s, whose father watched in the 1960s, and who declared it was now their time. Subsequent letters escalated. One referenced the Broadduses' three children as "young blood." Another expressed impatience at the family's continued absence. The letters arrived via U.S. mail. They were signed. They were typed. And they were terrifying.

Westfield police investigated. Private investigators were hired. Former FBI agents were brought in. DNA recovered from an envelope suggested the sender might be a woman — but no match was ever made. The Broadduses sued the previous owners for failing to disclose a letter they'd received before selling. That lawsuit was dismissed in 2017. A proposal to demolish the house and split the lot was rejected by the Westfield Township Planning Board. Every avenue closed.

The case remains open. The identity of The Watcher has never been confirmed.
